A free text editor, perfect for editing or writing code.

Free audio software that does it all. Fairly easy to use, too!

Gimp
A free graphics editing utility, sometimes called the poor man's Photoshop. Fully featured, but with a bit of a learning curve.

Google Nik
A full suite of photography/image editing software plugins.
GAME ENGINES
A growing list of game engines. Each has a trial or is free to use, and has their own robust communities. Each has their strengths, and can be used for professional or hobbyist projects.
Unreal Engine
Extremely powerful and accessible multiplatform game engine. Free to use with extensive resources.
